Week 1 - Learning To Love.

Matthew 12:

46 While He was still speaking to the multitudes, behold, His mother and brothers were standing outside, seeking to speak to Him.

47 And someone said to Him, “Behold, Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside seeking to speak to You.”

48 But He answered the one who was telling Him and said, “Who is My mother and who are My brothers?”

49 And stretching out His hand toward His disciples, He said, “Behold, My mother and My brothers!

50 “For whoever does the will of My Father who is in heaven, he is My brother and sister and mother.”

So, what IS the will of Jesus’ Father?

Let’s look at one of Jesus’ commands.

John 13:34

A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another.

Let’s take a survey – does this sound easy? Or difficult?

Matthew 11:

28 “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.

29 “Take My yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you shall find rest for your souls.

30 “For My yoke is easy, and My load is light."

Now, this implies that being weary and heavy-laden is a much more difficult yoke to bear. We can wear ourselves out trying to do on our own what we are meant to get help with.

Have you ever tried to do something honorable on your own but it turned out to be too difficult? What about when you asked for help from your parents? Chances are, they:
1. Already tried to do it.

2. Learned some things along the way.

3. Have some excellent advice to give you.

Let’s move on. What comes to mind when you’re called to love one another?

During Jesus’ lifetime and ministry, He met many different people and different situations. It amazes me that God the Father inspired so much that happened, that Jesus’ life and teachings answered every question people could have. However, like rare and precious pearls in the ocean, they have to be searched for. Thankfully we have the Bible, we just have to spend time reading it, searching for His treasures for us.

How does loving one another conflict with the attitudes of the world?

Matthew 20:

25 But Jesus called them to Himself , and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men exercise authority over them.

26 “It is not so among you, but whoever wishes to be great among you shall be your servant,

27 and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave;

28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”

Also:

Matthew 23:

11 “But the greatest among you shall be your servant.

12 “And whoever exalts himself shall be humbled; and whoever humbles himself shall be exalted.

In what ways can we serve one another?

Matthew 7:

24 “Therefore, everyone who hears these words of Mine, and acts upon them, may be compared to a wise man, who built his house upon the rock.

25 “And the raid descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and burst against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded upon the rock.
